“Foreign aid is taking money from the poor people of a rich country and giving it to the rich people of a poor country.”

Due to urban land constraints many struggling families are forced to build small dwellings alongside polluted waterways. These homes lack not only running water, but any type of proper hygiene facilities. In these living situations, everyday tasks can become a fight for survival. Children are susceptible to deadly diseases such as dengue fever that thrive in these wet environments. With limited resources and a growing population, hope can at times seem out of reach. The unfortunate reality is that some families become backed into a corner where the only way forward is to resort to desperate measures to survive. Sometimes even small children can be caught in the middle of family finances, or can even be at the center of such desperate measures.
Government programs do exist within the Philippines, but they simply can not, or do not reach everyone who needs assistance. Rumor has it, that the vast majority of these programs are often exploited by the very individuals who run them! More specifically, it's often reported that many donations and foreign aid that is sent by foreign governments after a natural disaster occurs, basically skips the poor entirely and is instead horded by those with connections. Don't let this scare you, and by all means, do not loose faith! It's both easy and convenient sometimes to avoid charitable giving in fear of one's money being exploited, or concluding that what little you can afford to give is not worth giving. At the end of the day, corruption or not, if no one gives donations then no one can receive anything. This is why we simply can not give up on Charities in the Philippines, instead we have to try to support those who are trying their best to give back. At the very least we do it for the children, they are the innocent ones who will suffer the most if we simply give up.
When visiting the Philippines it can be challenging when trying to navigate though all the "chismis" (gossip) surrounding begging "Street Kids." If you are concerned about the possibility of your donations making the situation worse, then our advice would be to practice one of the following three rules: 1.) donate only food, 2.) only give to those who are not aggressively begging, or 3.) donate to one of our experienced charities in the Philippines listed below. This way you can be sure that your donations are not supporting child labor, being used to buy alcohol, drugs, or worse!
